Olga Punga, who was sentenced in political case, released from jail

The Hâncești Town Court accepted Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo’ request to suspend the serving of the sentence by Olga Punga in connection with the revision of her case. Olga Punga is to be set free from the Rusca penitentiary immediately, her lawyer Victor Munteanu announced.

According to him, Olga Punga will be set free after being held for a period of three years and five months. “Olga Punga was sentenced to eight years and six months in jail as a result of an abusive, illegal trial conducted behind closed doors, in revenge because she refused to give statements against Veaceslav Platon, as the prosecutors demanded. The justice system did what it was to do, correctly, impartially and legally. I’m very glad that the family reunites as I saw in person the drama experienced by the members of the Punga family in the period,” Victor Munteanu posted on Facebook, being quoted by IPN.

The former employee of Moldindconbank was convicted of considerable swindle as part of a criminal group at the start of January 2018. The Buiucani Court gave her eight years and six months in jail. In July 2018, the Appeals Court modified the accusation and sentenced her to 2 years and a half behind bars for abuse of power. But the Supreme Court of Justice quashed this decision and upheld the sentence of the first court.

In February 2020, Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo announced that 38 cases, including that of Olga Punga, are considered to be political in character and will be revised by a working group of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
