The obtaining of the EU candidate country status will represent the Republic of Moldova’s detachment from the space of poverty and insecurity, said the former president of the Constitutional Court Alexandru Tănase. Representatives of the government consider the EU candidate country status that can be obtained in June will offer the Republic of Moldova the chance of modernizing and developing.
Representatives of the government said the obtaining of this status for Moldova would mean the irreversibility of the European course. The flawless management of the crisis of Ukrainian refugees shows that the Moldovans are Europeans.
“I hope we will become an accession candidate country at the end of June. This will be a motivation for the citizens, while the governments, regardless of their color, should work to do the necessary reforms. In the accession process, there is the bureaucratic problem, but there is also the way in which the member states perceive the countries. The European countries were considerably impressed by the wait in which Moldovan society reacted to the problem of refugees. It is important to keep cohesion in society for this wish to become an EU member state to have a reflection on the election outcome,” PAS MP Oazu Nantoi stated in the program “Good Evening” on the public TV channel.
The obtaining of the candidate country status does not mean that the country will immediately join the EU, but this offers a clear European integration perspective and a clear agenda of the reforms that are to be implemented, said the ex-president of the Constitutional Court Alexandru Tănase.
“This moment can ensure the Republic of Moldova’s detachment from the space of instability, insecurity and poverty. It is a chance for the Republic of Moldova. But we should take into account the fact that Turkey obtained the candidate country status many years ago and is yet at the stage of negotiations. The developments yet depend on us. It won’t go to the political conjuncture later. As to the accession criteria, I’m optimistic, including as regards the market economy as we do not have state participation in the economy as other countries do,” said Alexandru Tănase.
For his part, journalist Ion Terguță said the submission of the application for EU membership was influenced by the geopolitical conjuncture and the war in Ukraine accelerated the process of rapprochement with the EU.
“The European Union said it clearly that it does not intend to expand to the East. This choice is the merit of the people of the Republic of Moldova. But the question is, what the government did for the purpose? To be sincere, we didn’t fulfill the criteria stipulated in the Association Agreement. If they had taken these criteria into account, the Republic of Moldova wouldn’t have had any chance. But we now have this geopolitical conjuncture that enables us to get this status. We have sufficient problems that we need to solve. If we believe that the Europeans should draw us into the EU, this is an incorrect strategy,“ stated Ion Terguță.
Two days ago, the European Parliament adopted a resolution by which it requests the European Commission and the European Council to offer the candidate country status to the Republic of Moldova. Such a status is granted by the unanimous vote of the EU member states.
