Obolonik: Unprecedented blow to Transnistrian budget, of tens of millions of dollars

The Transnistrian region has not witnessed such a blow to its budget as it did after January 1, said the so-called Minister of Economy in Tiraspol Sergei Obolonik, quoted by the local press. According to him, due to the crisis, the revenues that did not reach the budget amount to tens of millions of dollars, which is a colossal amount for the Transnistrian region, IPN reports.

"There are no tax payments. No foreign economic activity that is not related to the supply of food products to the population was carried out. The fall was colossal," said the Transnistrian official.

Sergei Obolonik noted that the industrial sector, especially the heavy industry, did not work in January and, as a result, people were left without work.

He added that although, during the period when the enterprises were closed, payments were offered, including for leave, the citizens of the Transnistrian region were not paid monthly salaries. Sometimes, such events make the people look for another job, which is fatal for the maintenance of the activity of enterprises.

As of January 1, 2025, the Transnistrian region has no longer received Russian gas delivered by the Russian company Gazprom. In January, the people living on the left bank of the Nistru were not supplied with gas and thus did not have heat in homes and experienced daily power cuts.
