Number of persons affected by cancer goes up
Statistics show a continuous increase in the number of persons diagnosed with oncological diseases. According to the director general of the Oncology Institute Victor Cernat, in 2011 there were recorded by 300 cases of cancer more than in 2010 and this figure is on the rise. The children are also affected by such diseases, mainly solid tumors and leukemia.
“Within the Anticancer Week, people from different areas of the country benefit from free oncological examinations, even if they do not have health insurance policy or identification papers. Moreover, more than 60 doctors of the Oncology Institute went to five districts of the country to examine people free of charge. Another 16 specialists will work in central district polyclinics in Chisinau in the period,” Victor Cernat has told Info-Prim Neo.
The persons who have health insurance policy do not pay for the treatment for oncological diseases. Besides, there are five categories of medically uninsured persons who benefit from free treatment.
The most often forms of cancer met during the last five years were the rectal cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer and stomach cancer. The incidence of thyroid gland cancer increased 5-6 times during the last several years.
“90% of the surgical, chemotherapeutical and radiological treatments are provided at the Oncology Institute that is outfitted with modern equipment. More difficult cases such as transplant of bone marrow and the difficult amputations, which represent about 7% of all the cases, are performed abroad, mainly in Austria. We plan to open a transplant center in Chisinau in about two years,” said Victor Cernat.
The Anticancer Week takes place on the first week of June.
