NORLAM completes duties in Moldova

The Norwegian Mission of Rule of Law Advisers to Moldova NORLAM is completing its mission to Moldova. In a round-up conference, the Mission’s head Siri Fjortoft said the Norwegian experts who have been in Chisinau during ten years witnessed difficult processes in the Moldovan judicial system. But the wish of the Moldovan authorities to make changes led to palpable results. “We leave behind a justice system with precise commitments designed to be fulfilled,” said Siri Fjortoft, quoted by IPN.

Anette Carnarius Elseth, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice and Public Security of Norway, said NORLAM was receptive to the needs of the Republic of Moldova. This covered the whole system of criminal justice. The Mission’s activity had a significant impact on the training of professionals.

Minister of Justice Vladimir Cebotari said the work of the NORLAM Mission changed the state of affairs in penitentiaries. The Norwegian experts’ researches, analyses and strategies that referring to the needs of the Moldova justice sector were very important. “We thank the NORLAM Mission for strengthening the Moldovan justice system. We are to put into practice many of the learned things so that we have a justice system that meets people’s expectations,” stated the minister.

NORLAM has worked in Moldova based on a bilateral memorandum of understanding between the Government of Moldova and the Government of Norway that was signed on May 3, 2007. NORLAM provided assistance in strengthening the capacities of the legal system. The mission included 35 experts.
