Nine preschool education institutions – three from Chisinau, one from Briceni and five from Taraclia – have joined the Ministry of Education’s program on the social-linguistic integration of students speaking other languages than Romanian by extending the number of subjects studied in the Romanian language. The project started in 2011 and covers now 32 schools.

Interviewed by IPN, Zinaida Bejenari, vice director of the Theoretical Lyceum of Beleavinti, Briceni district, said that three subjects will be taught in Romanian at their institution. These are: “Technological Education”; “Plastic Education”, and “Physical Education” in the fifth-ninth grades. The program is useful as the students will better know the language and this will help them in the future.

Principal of the secondary school of Albota de Jos of Taraclia district Vitalie Tataru said they will teach in Romanian “Musical Education”, “Plastic Arts”, and “Technological Education” in the fifth and seventh grades. The institution has promoted the studying of the Romanian language for three years. Since 2012, all the subjects are taught in the official language from the first grade. 70% of the village’s residents are Bulgarians and the parents want their children to know the official language. They aim to introduce more subjects taught in Romanian next year.

Director of the Chisinau Theoretical Lyceum “Olimp” Elvira Vasic said that the subject “Civic Education” is taught in Romanian in the tenth and twelfth grades from September 1. They want to motivate the students to study the language and to take a higher grade when they sit the Baccalaureate exam in the Romanian language.

Earlier, the program was joined by the Theoretical Lyceum “Petru Movila” and the Theoretical Lyceum “Natalia Ghiorghiu” of Chisinau, the secondary schools of Musaitu, Cairaclia and Sofievca and the secondary school “Olimpii Panov” of Taraclia town.
