After Moldova obtained the EU candidate status, the authorities adopted a plan for fulfilling the nine recommendations formulated by the European Commission. The plan contains 60 actions. Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, stated that all the stipulated measures will be implemented by March 31, IPN reports.
In public hearings staged by the Parliament’s commission on foreign policy and European integration, Nicu Popescu said that even if last year was a very difficult year, it was a historic one for the country. The Republic of Moldova managed to obtain a new status in its relationship with the European Union.
“By granting the EU candidate status to us, the European Union supported our accession perspective and also the accession process. This was indeed decided in the context of the war in Ukraine, but the obtaining of the EU candidate status for the Republic of Moldova wasn’t guaranteed by far. It was the result of our efforts, of society and the government team,” stated the official.
He noted that the Republic of Moldova advances simultaneously on two dimensions. It has to further fulfill obligations that derive from the Association Agreement with the EU. There are reforms that need to be done and legislative adjustments that need to be made. In parallel, it develops its internal bodies so as to materialize the accession process. A plan for fulfilling the nine recommendations formulated by the European Commission was adopted. The plan covers the justice sector reform, the fight against corruption that, together with the state capture, affected primarily society and kept the country far from the EU accession perspectives.
Four of the nine conditions imposed by the European Commission refer to the justice sector reform. The others refer to the fight against corruption, the fight against organized crime and strengthening of the administrative capacities for joining the EU.
