Nina Corcinschi: Quality of Romanian language has improved

The quality of the Romanian language has improved since Moldova became independent, in particular in the cultural and academic usage, but less so in its conversational form, says Nina Corcinschi, director of the Institute of Romanian Philology “Bogdan Petriceicu-Hasdeu”.

“There is solid adherence of cultured people in Moldova to the culture of the entire Romanian space, to the Romanian literature, to good quality education. And there are well-trained young people in schools too. But among ordinary people, and not only, errors are prevalent”, Nina Corcinschi told IPN.

Colloquial Romanian in Moldova remains heavily littered with Russianisms, with Anglicisms creeping in lately as well. “As a result, we get a hybrid language with many expressions that should not be found in the Romanian language. This comes from the desire of young people to impress. It’s a false effect that actually demonstrates a lack of culture”, added the philologist.

However, Nina Corcinschi notes that many young people speak an “impeccable Romanian”, which was a rarity twenty years ago. “(Then) the Romanian language was not as polished as it is today. Today, the Romanian language in the cultural communities has gained in correctness and nuance”.

The Republic of Moldova celebrates “Our Language” on August 31.
