Nicu Popescu in Valletta: Moldova counts on Malta’s support in our EU accession bid

Moldova counts on the support of Malta, among other countries, for starting EU accession negotiations by the end of this year, as well as for the acceleration of EU enlargement. The subject of Moldova’s European path and progress in implementing the nine recommendations of the European Commission were addressed during a meeting in Valletta between Nicu Popescu, Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, and his Maltese counterpart Ian Borg.

Nicu Popescu appreciated the presence of Prime Minister Robert Abelala at the European Political Community Summit on June 1, this marking the first visit of a Maltese Prime Minister to the Republic of Moldova. The authorities in Chisinau count on the participation of Malta in the 4th ministerial conference of the Support Platform for the Republic of Moldova, which will take place in Chisinau in the fall of this year.

Also in Valletta, a memorandum was signed on the cooperation between the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies and the Diplomatic Institute of the MAEIE in the context of the desire to intensify cooperation at the institutional level between the two states.

Nicu Popescu also had a meeting with Glenn Bedingfield, the president of the Foreign and European Affairs Commission of the House of Representatives, where he advocated for a deeper parliamentary dialogue, but also cooperation in areas such as tourism, cyber security and digitalization.
