The National Anticorruption Council “Moldova Mea” made an approach to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO), asking holding accountable Prime Minister Vlad Filat and other functionaries in connection with the recordings of telephone conversations broadcast by the media. In those conversations, Vlad Filat instructs the head of the Main State Tax Inspectorate Nicolae Vicol to block the accounts of a company. In a news conference on February 28, the Council’s chairman Fiodor Ghelici said he was sure that the recordings are authentic as ‘this is the way Vlad Filat governs the country’. Fiodor Ghelici stated that though the Tax Inspectorate is controlled by the executive, Vlad Filat does not have the right to give personal orders. “The decision makers in Moldova seriously violate the constitutional rights of the people. The recordings show that all those who talked with Vicol gave him orders and this is revolting,” he said. If the PGO does not start a criminal case, the National Anticorruption Council will go to court. Fiodor Ghelici said that he made the request to the Prosecutor General’s Office not because he wants Vlad Filat or other functionaries to be jailed, but because they must answer for their deeds. Earlier, a businessman from Gagauzia filed a complaint against Vlad Filat and Nicolae Vicol to the PGO.
