NGO calls on authorities not to kill stray dogs

Members of the Animal Protection Association “Alga” called upon the local authorities of Chisinau not to start poisoning stray dogs in the capital city following the tragedy that happened in Romania. In a news conference at IPN, activists of “Alga” said they possess information that the authorities intend to massively kill the stray dogs in Chisinau.

The Association’s head Valentina Dudnic said the mayor general made an order to this effect and the district head’s offices are collecting information about the areas with the largest number of stray dogs so as to send it to the cleanup company “Autosalubritate”.  According to Valentina Dudnic, 2.6 million lei is allocated annually from the municipal budget to the company for killing stray dogs.

The volunteers of “Alga” asked for a meeting with Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca so as to identify human solutions to the problem of animals without owners. There are 350 dogs at the shelter in Bacioi, but there is not enough space and food for these dogs. The dogs are kept in cages by 30-40.

On September 2, a four-year-old child died after he was attacked by stray dogs near the Park Tei in Sector 2 of Bucharest. Medical examiners established that the death was caused by external hemorrhage. The child was bitten hundreds of times.
