Next government will be formed under influence of foreign factor, commentator

During two months and a half after the February 24 parliamentary elections, the Democratic Party intentionally allowed the MPs of the Party of Socialists and the Bloc ACUM to discuss the formalization of a parliamentary majority, banking on the fact that there are slim chances for the two entities to reach a compromise. But the developments of the last few weeks show the Socialists will most probably govern with the Democrats, stated political commentator Anatol Țăranu, ex-MP and ex-ambassador to Russia, IPN reports.

“Unfortunately, the major political decisions are taken not only in Chisinau, but also in other parts of the world. In this case, we have Moscow’s influence and this is regrettable. This points once again to the limited sovereignty that is typical of the Republic of Moldova. I think the next government will be formed in the Republic of Moldova under the influence of the foreign factor,” Anatol Țăranu stated in an interview for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty’s Moldovan Service.

As to the discussions between the MPs of the Bloc ACUM and the Socialists, the political commentator said ACUM is rather tempted to solve the problem in a cardinal manner. But the fear that this can lead to political death makes them be very attentive. This self-preservation reflex will make those from the Bloc ACUM gave up forming an alliance with the Socialists.

“The PDM has what to offer to the eventual partners. As they use to do in Moldovan politics, they will divide the assets. Everything depends on the skillfulness of those who will negotiate, on the kompromat possessed by the potential partners and the government will be ultimately formed for the Democratic Party, namely with the Socialists. And this is a pity as the European course will be affected. I do not say this course will be completely lost, but its intensity will definitely decrease.”

Asked if the PDM would lose something if it forms a coalition with the PSRM, Anatol Țăranu said the Democrats would lose a part of the political influence they had in the previous Parliament. “The big chances of having a PDM-PSRM government continue to exist, but the appearance of such a coalition does not mean the danger of snap elections will disappear,” he stated.
