Graduates of driving schools will now have a limited timeframe of one year to pass both the theoretical and practical driving exams required to obtain a driver’s license. Extensions will only be granted upon proof of attending additional practical lessons. This is among the new rules announced by the Public Services Agency (ASP), IPN reports.
“The Government Decision on the examination procedure took effect on november 17, 2024, introducing changes to the process of obtaining driving licenses, easing restrictions for vehicles with automatic transmissions, and expanding driving rights for certain categories and subcategories”, stated Iacob Zavtur, head of ASP’s Vehicle Registration and Driver Examination Department.
To support candidates taking practical tests for categories C and D (trucks and buses), new vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions have been purchased, amounting to approximately 70 million lei.
Drivers already holding licenses in any category will automatically gain the right to operate motor vehicles with a maximum speed capacity of 50 km/h (category AM).
By december 2024, the ASP plans to launch new digital services related to vehicle ownership transfer. This will allow vehicles to be sold online, provided the parties have electronic signatures. Other electronic services will include driving license reissuance and online exam scheduling.
