New identity card contains no address, but allows for electronic authentication

The citizens of the Republic of Moldova will have a new card-type identity document. The holder of the new identity card will be able to access electronic services online, without having to go to the institutions that provide them. The card will not contain information about the domicile/temporary residence. The new model was approved by the Cabinet and is to be put into circulation by March 31, 2025, IPN reports.

The Public Services Agency said the holders of identity cards will authenticate themselves in the information systems MSign, MPower, MPass, e-Invoice, e-Licensing, e-Civil Status, etc. The citizens will be able to sign documents, applications or official statements without going to the offices of public institutions.

The Moldovans living abroad and holding an identity card will be able to remotely access public services through the government's digital platform.

According to the PSA, the elimination of the information about domicile/residence will benefit the citizens as they will no longer need to change their identity document every time they change the address.

The identity cards will acquire an extensive utility and will be used not only for identification on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, but also as a travel document in countries that will recognize them, in time (for example, the member states of the European Union). The holder of an identity card will be able to sign electronic documents, contracts, which will be valid and recognized in the EU area.

The ID card holder will have access to the EU's Digital Single Market through mutual recognition of key elements, such as electronic identification, electronic documents, electronic signatures and electronic distribution services.
