Starting 7 March 2013, a new format of ID documents will be introduced under a Government decision. The documents issued before will be valid until their expiry dates. ICT Minister Pavel Filip said the design of the ID cards and other identification documents issued to Moldovan citizens will be modernized. The new format adopted by Moldova will be ID-1 (54 mm x 85.6 mm), which is similar in size to a standard bank card. The background will be abstract and ID cards won't come with an accompanying sheet anymore. The format is used in many countries around the world, including in the EU member states.
