Nationality of parents will be written in child’s birth certificate optionally

The parents’ nationality will be written in the child’s birth certificate at the request of the parents. The proposal was put forward by the Liberal Party. It refers to a bill submitted by the Ministry of Justice, which was adopted by Parliament in the first reading, Info-Prim Neo reports. Last yearend, the Ministry of Justice asked excluding the nationality from the civil status documents (birth and marriage certificates), after Moldova was convicted by the ECHR for preventing a foreigner from changing his nationality in the civil status documents from Moldovan into Romanian. Deputy Minister of Justice Vladimir Grosu said then the ‘nationality’ term creates confusion as some people mix it up with residency or ethnicity. In the March 5 meeting of the parliamentary commission on appointments and immunities, Liberal MP Ana Gutu said the parents must have the possibility of writing the nationality in the children’s certificates. “If a child remains without both of the parents in early childhood, he/she must know where they come from. The same applies to children from mixed families. When the children come of age and apply for an identity card, they can choose themselves the nationality. This way we will cultivate a kind of devotion to the country,” she stated. The commission endorsed the amendment proposed by the Liberal Party. The bill is to be debated in the second reading.
