The National Movement for People, which consists of political parties, public associations, experts and members of civil society from the country and the diaspora, intends to mount a protest this Sunday, February 19, to demand that the government should fully pay citizens’ energy bills. In parallel, the Movement continues collecting signatures from the population to support this approach.
In a news conference at IPN, Tatiana Bordeaianu, department head of the Party “Building Europe at Home”, said it is a week since the Movement has launched the process of collecting signatures in favor of obliging the Government to fully pay citizens’ electricity, heat and gas bills for the winter months. Over 143,000 signatures have been collected so far. “Our general conclusion after a week of work is that there is widespread support for the initiative of the Movement for People,” noted Tatiana Bordeaianu.
Sergei Mișin, who heads the Party “Renaissance-Vozrojdenie”, said it is good that the initiative is supported not only in the country, but also by representatives of the diaspora. “Our compatriots from abroad launched an online petition and also ask that the Government should be obliged to pay the bills for the population for the three winter months,” stated Sergei Mișin.
Shor Party MP Marina Tauber said now that Premier Natalia Gavrilița resigned, President Maia Sandu should also leave. Parliament should be reelected as it is not competent to govern. In the process of collecting signatures, they saw that they people are dissatisfied with the state of affairs in the country. Following discussions with the people, it was decided to stage a peaceful protest next to the Parliament Building on February 19.
Mihai Petrache, who heads the Centrist Union of Moldova, said the former government didn’t react to the approach made by the Movement for People. “We ascertained the absence of communication between the government and society, the citizens,” he noted.
Maia Laguta, head of the public association “Salvgardare” (“Safeguarding”), said the people are in a very difficult situation and cannot cope with the costs. They are sent to court because they do not pay the bills. In such conditions, the Movement’s approaches should be supported by all the parties, including the Party of Action and Solidarity.
