National Costume Day instituted in Moldova

The National Costume Day will be celebrated in Moldova on the last Sunday of June. Parliament adopted a relevant supplement to the Decision on commemoration days, holidays and nonworking days in Moldova in its November 19 sitting, IPN reports.

Acting Minister of Culture Monica Babuc, presenting the draft decision in Parliament, said the national dress represents the symbol of a people, as the language, national anthem and flag do. “During two decades of independence, the cultural institutions and society contributed to knowing the traditional costume. The promotion of the traditional dress revealed its beauty and authenticity. There is an increased interest in the national costume in modern society. This is a source of inspiration for clothing artists from all over the world,” she stated.

Monica Babuc noted that the most recent initiatives of the Ministry, civil society and the mass media concerning the wearing of the national costume at national holidays had a major impact on society. The National Costume Day represents a model for conciliating society as the traditional costumes of all the ethnic communities living in Moldova will set the tone on this day.
