Natalia Uzun: European integration must be separated from political competition

Journalist Natalia Uzun considers that it is extremely important that the European integration process in Moldova should be separated from the political struggle and competition, which today went beyond any European standards. It has nothing to do with democracy and turned into remnants of technologies for manipulating public opinion. The statements were made at a public debate hosted by IPN News Agency.

Natalia Uzun said that the results of the October 20 electoral exercise do not illustrate the real attitude towards the European integration of the Republic of Moldova. For example, the Gagauz citizens, who are always treated as pro-Russian supporters, run companies in the European Union. They started businesses in Romania without knowing 20 words in Romanian, but only half a year later they were speaking Romanian and promoting their products throughout the European Union.

The referendum on Moldova's accession to the EU was a subject of political parties, political manipulation and political competition. The journalist noted that, unfortunately, it was a bargaining chip in a process that is extremely important for society in the Republic of Moldova.

Natalia Uzun said that, over time, no one, either society or the governments, have made the slightest effort to strengthen the state, the civic identity. There was no point that would unite society around it, given that the Republic of Moldova is a multiethnic country, where there are different opinions, different beliefs.

The journalist also believes that in Moldovan society, any kind of contradictions can be overcome, when that basis for the Republic of Moldova is identified in order to take it to another level of development. In her view, if society does not make an effort and does not meditate at least for a while on how come to terms with colleague, neighbors, opponents, fighting cannot stop. If the people do not do it, a historic opportunity will be missed. It doesn't matter who is in power, but it is important that the people get along with each other, said Natalia Uzun.

The public debate entitled "What do Moldovans know about the EU? Gap between expectations and reality” was staged within the project "IPN News Agency for Social Cohesion and Pro-European Moldova", funded by the International Media Support (IMS).
