The Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections called upon the lawmakers not to use the electoral system for barter in political bargains. In a communiqué, the members of the Coalition say they are deeply concerned. Besides the law on the joint electoral system that was passed in a record time, a new bill concerning the electoral system was registered recently, IPN reports.

The new initiative was put forward by a group of Communist MPs. On May 2, they registered with the Parliament’s Secretariat a bill that besides abrogating the law on the joint electoral system, suggests increasing the election threshold from 4% to 7% for political parties, from 7% to 9% for electoral blocs consisting of two parties and from 9% to 11% for those that include three and more parties.

The adoption of such a bill will limit drastically the electoral rights of the voters and the runners, consider the Coalition members. The modification of the electoral threshold can lead to the exclusion of a number of parties for which the people voted from the political life. The Venice Commission even in 2008 recommended Moldova to decrease the election threshold for political parties from 6% to 4% so as to prevent the loss of votes in the redistribution process.

The Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections says that the state of instability in Parliament and the inability to form a stable majority as well as the promotion of the narrow party interests of certain political players endanger the national interests, destabilize the sociopolitical life and push Moldova further from the European course. It asks the parties represented in Parliament to identify constructive, long-term solutions for removing the political conflicts faced so as not to endanger the work of the state institutions and the democratic processes in Moldova.
