MPs require from NBM governor information on leu fall

Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) Leonid Talmaci will inform the MPs, within the meeting of the Parliament, about the causes of the leu fall compared to dollar and euro. Christian-Democrat deputy Gheorghe Susarenco required explanations on Thursday, 25 May, at parliament’s meeting, from BNM governor regarding the fluctuations taking place these days on currency market. Susarenco said that, according to the opinion of many experts, drastic depreciation of the national currency, produced lately, could lead to a rapid inflation process of the national currency. These days, exchange desks of Chisinau presented an exchange rate leu/dollar higher than the one registered last week – 13.45 lei for purchasing and 13.54 lei for selling. The exchange rate of the European currency got over 17 lei. Commercial banks explain the increase of the exchange rate leu/dollar by the deficit on the currency market of dollar, motivating by reduction „up to possible and impossible limits of exports”. At the same time, NBM explains the fall tendency of the national currency by “speculative operations”. Banking experts do not exclude further increase of the exchange rate, in case when the government „is not solving the main problems in such cases”.
