MPs comment on last withdrawal from PAS list

The lack of combativeness in the case of the two candidates for MP from the PAS list, who withdrew from the race after information denigrating them appeared in the public sphere, shows these candidates have integrity-related problems. The opinion was stated by representatives of the PUN and PPPDA.

The discussion arouse after Alexandru Catan, who was under No. 45 on the PAS list, yesterday announced his decision to withdraw his candidacy following reports about his alleged involvement in alcohol smuggling schemes.

According to the PUN leader Octavian Țîcu, the latest withdrawals by PUN candidates are a proof of the fact that the lists were compiled in a hurry and without the use of a strict integrity filter. Earlier, journalist Nata Albot, who ran on the PAS ticket, also withdrew from the race, being accused of having been caught with banned substances at the Chisinau International Airport.

“Both of the cases, Albot and Catan, point to lack of integrity. If they gave up so easily, it means there was a problem indeed. The party assumed responsibility for the list. The lack of combativeness in the case of the two is a proof that they are to blame. But everyone is responsible for their own list,” Octavian Țîcu stated in the talk show “Ghețu Asks” on TV8 channel.

The representatives of the PPPDA said they do not see a problem in the withdrawal of candidates from the lists, if the legislation permits this, and encourage the investigation of the activity of each candidate for MP by the press.

“We are sure we have a very good list, with tested people, with people who took part in protests and sat in Parliament. I encourage civil society and the press to thoroughly examine each list and, if integrity problems are identified, the party should withdraw this candidate. The legislation allows making changes to the list seven days before the election day at the latest,” said PPPDA MP Vasile Năstase.

The Central Election Commission so far registered 14 contenders in the July 11 snap parliamentary elections. Another three files are being examined. Under the law, the election campaign for each candidate starts when these are officially registered as election runners.
