Movie about Katyn massacre screened at Odeon
The Polish Embassy in Chisinau and the Cultural Center Odeon present the movie “Katyn” directed by Andrzej Wajda on Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18.
The movie is shown in the context of the double tragedy of the Polish people. Poland suffered its worst political disaster since the Second World War after its president Lech Kaczynski and dozens of top government officials were killed in a plane crashed in western Russia on April 10. Also, it is 70 years of the massacre in Katyn, where Soviet secret police executed over 22,000 Polish officers, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Odeon manager Lidia Troianowski said the movie “Katyn” has been very popular in Moldova. “I think the hall will be packed as most of the seats have been already reserved,” she told the Agency.
Lidia Troianowski also said that the Embassy of Poland hopes the movie will help the Moldovans understand why Katyn is so important to the Polish people.
“Katyn” was nominated for Oscar in 2008, in the best foreign movie section.
The Polish delegation had been flying to Smolensk to attend the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre. Everyone on board died when the Tupulov Tu-154 aircraft clipped some trees on its approach to Smolensk airport and then broke up. The crash wiped out almost half of Poland's leadership.
