More iodine in salt on shop shelves and as amount used in food

The quantity of iodine in salt intended for sale and the one that is used in food industry was increased. This way, 1 kilogram of salt must contain 25 to 40 mg of iodine. Also, a number of public institutions will use only iodized salt when making baked goods, IPN reports.

Iodized salt will be used to make baked goods and other products that are supplied to general educational institutions, public health facilities, units of the National Army, penitentiaries, placement centers, community rehabilitation centers and old people’s homes.

Food business operators are allowed to repack iodized salt by observing clearly defined conditions for maintaining iodine levels.

Also, in order to reduce salt intake, the quantity of salt in baked goods must be of at most 1.5 grams of salt per 100 grams of products. As from June 1, 2024, the limit will be 1 gram of salt per 100 grams of product.

The changes to the Government decision concerning the eradication of iodine deficiency disorders were approved in the Cabinet’s last meeting of 2022. The National Public Health Agency and the National Food Safety Agency were designated as entities responsible for monitoring the implementation of this decision.
