Monument to writers persecuted by communists unveiled in Chisinau

Acting President of Moldova and Liberal Party’s leader Mihai Ghimpu has unveiled on Saturday a monument dedicated to the victims of the communist totalitarian regime in front of Writers’ Union in Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Ghimpu, the Liberals have engaged to install such a monument in each community in Moldova, as the Parliament didn’t hear President’s message based on the report of the Commission for researching the crimes of communist totalitarian regime in Moldova. “It’s important people know the names of those who opposed and were persecuted by communists, being deported to Siberia, shot or interned in psychiatric hospitals”, he stressed. Mihai Cimpoi, president of Writers’ Union, has said the monument is important for the memory of predecessors who suffered in the name of the truth about Romanian language, national identity and European values. “Through this monument they’ll be near us in our daily fight to impose the scientific and historical truth”, he said. The monument, made of rock, is a cross on a socle on which the names of persecuted writers are written.
