An architectural-monumental composition in memory of the victims of Stalinist deportations will be put up in the municipality of Cahul, as the Government decided on Friday, IPN reports.
The monument will be built at the intersection of the streets Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt and Ioan Vodă cel Cumplit. “The monument will be put up to eternalize the memory of the victims of Stalinist deportations from the municipality and the district of Cahul and to educate the generation in the spirit of knowledge and perpetuation of the historical truth,” runs the draft decision.
Following the “IUG” (South) operation, 1 183 families, 243 of which from Cahul district, were deported.
The Government also decided that a bust to poet Andrei Ciurunga will be placed on the Alley of Personalities in Cahul, which is his native town. Andrei Ciurunga, known as Robert Cahuleanu, is a reference name in the Romanian literature. He was a poet, memorialist, martyr of the jails of the dictatorial Romanian communist regime. The design of the bust will be authorized by the Ministry of Culture.
