Monument to Holocaust victims unveiled in Balti

A monument to the victims of the Holocaust – about six million Jews who were killed during the Second World War – was erected in Balti. The money for the monument was donated by members of the Jewish Community of Moldova, the European Jewish Fund and the association of Moldovan Jews settled in Israel “Izvoras”, Info-Prim Neo reports. A mourning meeting was held in memory of the victims of the Holocaust on September 1. It was attended by representatives of the central administration and the authorities of Balti municipality, officials of the Embassies of Russia, Lithuania and Bulgaria, the Consul of Poland, and representatives of public organizations, the Jewish Congress of Moldova says in a press release. Alexandr Bilinchis, co-president of the Jewish Community, proposed drafting a bill that would provide for the punishment of the persons that deny the Holocaust. Such laws exist in the EU member states, Russia and many other countries, Bilinchis said. “The Holocaust and the war should never repeat. The new generations must always remember those tragedies and fight against any xenophobic acts and attempts to rehabilitate the authors of those crimes,” the communique says. Candles were lit in memory of the Holocaust victims. There were dispersed rose petals. The Holocaust is is the term generally used to describe the genocide of approximately six million European Jews during World War II, a program of systematic state-sponsored extermination by Nazi Germany, under Adolf Hitler.
