Monument to be erected in Mereni village

A monument with the inscription “Mereni – 1475” will be set up in Mereni village of Anenii Noi district. The initiative put forward by the local community was approved by the Government, Info-Prim Neo reports. For the first time Mereni was mentioned in documents in 1475, during the rule of Stefan cel Mare. According to a legend, the first inhabitants discovered here an apple orchard which gave the name of the village (apples in Romanian translate as 'mere'). The monument was designed by plastic artist Ioan Grecu. It has two basic elements – three stylized trees that represent the origin of the village, and a stone with the inscription “Mereni – 1475”. The costs of designing, making and placing the monument will be covered with donations and sponsorships from the community and local economic entities.
