Monitoring activities of Moldovan-Ukrainian border to be extended

Very soon monitoring activities of Moldovan-Ukrainian border will be extended, including on its „green sector”, the head of EU Border Assistance Mission, General Ferenc Banfi, stated during a meeting with the prime minister Vasile Tarlev. The General noted that due to constructive cooperation with Governments of Moldova and Ukraine, certain significant results were obtained in the activity of border assistance mission, being found and stopped a range of smuggling groups. Ferenc Banfi highlighted that implementation of joint declaration of Prime Ministers of Moldova and Ukraine on regulating border crossing, made favorable conditions for setting order in this field. At his turn, Vasile Tarlev mentioned that expanding the international monitoring area of Moldovan-Ukrainian border would allow enforcement of the customs control, and as result reduction of the risk of criminal activities. In the context of deeper monitoring activities during the last period, according to the head of the Executive, the Moldovan part supports the recent proposal on strengthening the capacities of the border assistance mission, including by creating certain additional territorial offices. New customs regulations at Moldovan-Ukrainian border were implemented on 3 March 2006, according to a concluded agreement at the end of last year between Prime Ministers of Moldova and Ukraine, which is supported financially and logistically by the European Union.
