Moldova's Voter Roll goes electronic
A nationwide computerized voter file system will be used for the first time during the 2009 parliamentary elections, following a recent amendment brought to the electoral legislation, Info-Prim Neo reports.
For this purpose, every polling station is to be endowed with computers that will be connected to the server of the Central Election Commission (CEC).
According to CEC Secretary Iurie Ciocan, the system will remove the practice of “electoral tourism” and will help reduce the number of voters included in additional rolls. These numbers were inexcusably high during last year's local elections. In Gagauzia's town of Comrat alone the number of voters who didn't find their names on regular voter files exceeded 14,200; in Balti their number stood at 10,500, and in Hancesti at 9,600.
A number of members of the local election councils were skeptical about the functionality of the new project, doubting in particular its financial feasibility.
Moldova has at present 2.451 million eligible voters. Statistics show the number didn't change much from the previous years; in January 2006 it stood at 2.449 million, while in January 2007 at 2.447 million.
