Moldova's Veaceslav Gojan wins European boxing gold
Moldovan boxer Veaceslav Gojan won the gold medal at the European Championship that ended on Friday, June 24, in Turkey. In the 56kg final, Gojan bested Russia’s Dmitri Polyanskiy, 16-14.
This is Gojan’s second European medal. A pupil of coach Petru Caduc, he won the silver at the 2002 Championship in Russia. However, his most important achievement to date is the bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics.
The 28-year-old boxer will now prepare for the World Championship that will take place this fall, in Baku, Azerbaijan. There, Gojan will fight for qualification in the 2012 Olympics.
Another medal for Moldova at the European Championship in Turkey was won by Alexandru Rishcan, who took the bronze in the 52kg category.
