The Romanian citizens residing in the Republic of Moldova preferred Eugen Tomac, the nominee of the Liberal Democratic Party (PD-L) for Romania's legislative elections, which took place on Sunday, November 30. According to preliminary vote counts at the four polling stations in Chisinau, PD-L's candidate for the Chamber of Deputies polled roughly 1,150 votes, half of the about 2,300 valid votes cast. Eugen Tomac is followed by National Liberal nominee Nicolae Dabija with about 750 votes, and Social Democrat candidate Tudor Pantiru with some 300 votes. Tomac has told Info-Prim Neo he is “happy the Romanians made the right choice”. “Today on Romania's National Day we celebrate a great victory for Bessarabia because, 90 years after the Great Unification, Bessarabia deputes into the Bucharest Parliament the youngest representative”, said Tomac. He assured that once he becomes an MP he will fulfill all his promises and, especially, to obtain Romanian citizenship for all the Romanians living in Bessarabia. “I'll try to undo this wrong, to restore our rights, because the citizenship belongs to everyone of us”, declared Tomac. The PD-L nominee for Senate, Viorel Badea, also was the favorite of the Romanian voters in Moldova. With roughly 900 votes, Badea is followed by Greater Romania's candidate Ilie Ilascu (570 votes), National Liberal Petre Roman (530 votes), and Social Democrat Marian-Dan Mocanu (130 votes). The November 30 elections have opened a first-time opportunity for the Romanian diaspora to depute representatives into the Romanian Parliament. According to electoral officials, no major incidences or violations occurred during the process. At the same time, numerous voters have complained they were unable to make use of their constitutional right to elect because of residence-related difficulties.
