Moldova’s external trade qualitatively decreases

External trade of Moldova, in the first quarter of this year, decreased qualitatively, because of sanctions imposed by Russia on Moldovan wines imports. The experts of the Association for Participative Democracy (ADEPT) and of the Center "Expert-Grup", the authors of the monitoring reports of the Action Plan European Union – Moldova made this conclusion. „As result of imposed economic obstacles by Russia, the exports decreased, while the imports continue to increase. Exports increase to European Union and Central and Eastern Europe countries, for the moment, does not compensate the losses supported on eastern markets, and the deficit of commercial balance threatens the situation of current account”, it is shown in the Euromonitor "Action Plan European Union - Moldova: Assessment of the progress in 1 quarter 2006". According to the authors of the report, the situation will worsen if Russia introduces additional economic obstacles, to all types of alcoholic drinks, and starts to repatriate Moldovan workers. Ministry of Economics and Commerce (MEC) proposed a new Export Strategy 2006-2008, but, in experts’ opinion, this will not have immediate effects. „In the first quarter there were made certain progresses in complying with assumed commitments by Moldova to join World Commerce Organization, but other fields are rather difficult. MEC evaluated to 20 million dollars the savings of Moldovan producers that could get in the system GSP+, but at the same time it started the negotiations with EU in order to get certain Autonomous Preferential System (PCA)”. Euromonitor "Action Plan European Union - Moldova: Evaluation of the progress of the 1st quarter 2006" is already the second report made within the project the Action Plan Moldova –European Union. Reports of Euromonitor have aim to offer independent and objective monitoring of the implementing process of the Action Plan RM-EU, concluded on 22 February 2005. The project is implemented by the Association ADEPT together with the Center „Expert-Grup” and financed by the Department for International Development of Great Britain.
