Moldova’s Compact proposal components have been approved
The National Committee for Monitoring the Formulation of the Compact Assistance Programme approved the preliminary components of the country proposal. These concern the reconstruction of roads, improvement of the energy system, rehabilitation of the drinking water supply, sewerage and irrigation systems.
The Compact proposal components will be developed after systematizing the ideas and information obtained during debates. Later, the Compact will be submitted to the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), which is set to start the examination and finalization procedures in 2008, a communiqué from the MCA – Moldova team says.
According to team manager Valentina Badrajan, the Compact proposal components will be initially discussed with different groups of experts from relevant areas and with interested groups. A new round of debates will be organized for this purpose.
National coordinator of the Compact formulation activities, First Deputy Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanai said that the abovementioned problems were selected from a number of constraints identified earlier and they meet the financing criteria of MCC.
The Millennium Challenge Corporation, a U.S. government corporation designed to work with some of the poorest countries to reduce poverty through sustainable economic growth, selected Moldova as a Compact-eligible country on November 8, 2006. In December 2006, the MCC Board of Directors approved a USD 24.7 million agreement within Moldova’s Threshold Programme for support of anticorruption activities.
