Moldovan woman exploited in Russia, couple gets jail term

A 38-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man were sentenced to 9 and 10 years in prison respectively for human trafficking after they exploited a young woman from Edineț in the Russian Federation through labor. The sentence was pronounced by the Edinet Court, IPN reports.

According to the investigators, in March 2016, the defendant convinced a 27-year-old woman to go with him to Russia, promising her a future together. Once they reached the city of Chelyabinsk, the victim discovered that the man already in cohabitation with the other defendant. When she wanted to leave, the two confiscated her documents and forced her to work in the markets, without pay.

Between August and October 2016, the young woman was moved to a number of places, being constantly watched, threatened and physically assaulted. The two took all the money she earned daily, about 10,000 Russian rubles.

The Prosecutor's Office also informs that in addition to the conviction, the woman will not be able to get employed for four years. The sentence is not final and can be appealed to the North Court of Appeals within 15 days.
