More than 400 officers and sub-officers from Moldova have taken part in the KFOR mission in Kosovo since 2014. During five years, National Army service members guarded facilities of major importance and patrolled the operations area. Teams of bomb disposal technicians searched for munitions that remained in the ground since the war, IPN reports, quoting the Ministry of Defense.
The decision to deploy service members was adopted by Parliament on November 1, 2013. On March 11, 2014, the national flag of the Republic of Moldova was for the first time hoisted in the multinational base Camp Vilaggio Italia of the Multinational Battle Group – West (MNBG-W) in Pech.
The tenth Moldovan contingent works in Kosovo at present. It consists of 41 professional service members, 33 of whom are infantry members, seven are bomb disposal technicians and one is a general staff officer. These will return home this June, after a six-month mandate.
The NATO peacekeeping operation in Kosovo is conducted in accordance with Resolution 1244 of the United Nations Security Council. It involves over 4,000 service members from 28 countries.
