Moldovan perception of women representation at local level

Gender does not matter to most Moldovan voters, while some prefer men more than women in elective positions. The "Gender analysis of candidates for 2019 local elections" report results were presented at an IPN press conference by Alina Andronache, specialist in public relations and in advocacy at the Center for Partnership for Development.

"The more important the leadership positions is, the more citizens prefer a man for this position", said Alina Andronache.

According to the report, 10.85% of citizens would prefer a man for the position of chairperson of the school parents council and 31.6% would prefer a woman. At the opposite pole, for the position of president of the country, 40.5% of voters would prefer a man, 7.6% would prefer a woman, while for 49.2% of voters gender does not matter.

"The data shows the situation for 2016. In 2019, during the election race, the results of an opinion poll conducted in Chișinău show the same results. A significant portion of the citizens continue to prefer men”, said Alina Andronache.

The report was made by the Development Partnership Center as part of the "Supporting women's leadership and participation in decision-making in the Republic of Moldova" project, funded by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and the government of Sweden.
