Moldovan MPs thank European Parliament for adopting a resolution regarding Moldova

The Parliament voices its gratitude for the support offered to Moldova by the European Parliament (EP) that adopted a resolution concerning Moldova on October 26, shows a statement adopted unanimously by MPs on Friday November 3. MPs consider as important the attitude taken by EU in an attempt to support Moldova’s efforts in settling the Transnistrian dispute respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova at its border recognized at international level. Moldovan MPs qualify also as important the actions and efforts taken by EU in finding a solution to the Transnistrian crisis, especially the creation in December 2005 of a Mission to monitor the Moldovan-Ukrainian border and the support for introducing the new customs regime on Transnistrian segment. In the statement is remarked the fact the EP vehemently rejected the separatist tendencies, reiterating the position vis-à-vis the non-recognition of the so-called referendum in the east districts of Moldova, which are not controlled by the constitutional authorities, as well as the destabilizing and unconstructive character of the separatist leaders’ actions. The Parliament welcomes the mutual understanding with Moldova in the process of finding ways of overcoming the crisis in the commercial relations with the Russian Federation. In the end of the statement it is voiced the willingness to continue the actions to establish a functional democracy, law-based state and observance of human rights. In the EU Parliament’s statement, Russia was called on to fulfill its internationally assumed obligations to withdraw its troops and arms from the territory of Moldova. The EMPs condemned the Transnistria’s attempt to obtain independence unilaterally, organizing a so-called referendum, and called on Russia’s Government to abstain from its recognition. The European Parliament also called on all the sides involved in the conflict to abstain from actions that would increase tension in the region and to urgently return to the “5+2” talks.
