Moldovan and American psychologists share experience in assisting traumatized persons

Moldovan and American psychologists shared professional experience in assisting traumatized persons during a seminar held in Chisinau on April 16-18, Info-Prim Neo reports. The seminar was conducted by Dr. Jane Perrin, Ph.D. and Dr. Laura Rhoads, Ph.D., psychologists from North Carolina, the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau said in a press release. Attendees included practicing psychologists from the Winrock Regional Support Centers across Moldova, La Strada, IOM, and UNDP. As Dr. Jane Perrin said, the seminar was prompted by the stated needs of the psychologists in Moldova for basic information about domestic violence, diagnoses, treatment and also professional issues. Dr. Perrin added she was also struck by the lack of licensure, ethical standards and other mechanisms for public protection and professional identity in practicing psychology. The American experts took the opportunity of the seminar to share information with their Moldovan colleagues regarding various instruments and treatment approaches that are supported by research such as “Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy” and “Relaxation Techniques”. According to Dr. Rhoads, one of the goals of such seminars is to enhance the psychologists’ diagnostic skills and ethical principles in their efforts to assist women and children. The seminar was organized by the Bilateral Affairs Office of the U.S. Embassy in Moldova in partnership with the Winrock Foundation in Moldova. The NC-MD Bilateral Affairs Committee sponsored the event, through the initiative of Dr. Stephen Mackler D.D.S., and with the financial support of the Greensboro Jewish Federation and the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
