Moldova without police

The Republic of Moldova may remain without police force if the legislative body passes amendments to the legislation on the retirement of the Ministry of the Interior’s employees. The subject was discussed in the extended extraordinary plenary meeting of the National Council of the Trade Union “Demnitate” (“Dignity”) on March 26, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Different projects may be launched if the legislature adopts these amendments. Those who attended the plenary meeting said they are against the resignation of the entire Ministry’s staff,” Adrian Lebedinschi, secretary general of the Trade Union “Demnitate”, has told Info-Prim Neo. According to him, legal protests, including strikes involving police officers will be staged if the given legislation is modified. Adrian Lebedinschi also said that 650 police officers representing 8% of the police force have resigned this year so far. They do not include employees of the Carabineer Troops Department and the Emergencies Service. “About 500-600 police officers are ready to tender their resignations. It was proposed that the entire personnel of the Ministry of the Interior resign in protest,” said Adrian Lebedinschi. He warned that Moldova risks remaining without police if Parliament passes amendments on the retirement law. Last week, the leader of the Trade Union “Demnitate” Mihai Lascu said about 2,000 employees of the Ministry of the Interior offered their resignations. Under the amendments approved by the Government, the police officers will retire after a length of service of 25 years, not 20 as until present.
