The Moldovan athletes won 54 medals at the World Powerlifting Championship that was held in Belgium. The national squad consisting of 17 athletes brought home 36 golden medals, 13 silvers, and five bronzes, setting also 16 world records, IPN reports.
The best result among seniors was achieved by Dumitru Sacaliuc in the 110 kg class. He ranked first in all the events in which he took part. Roman Scorici (125 kg) became an absolute champion. He set a world record of 292.5 kg in the genuflexion event.
Among the youth, Leonid Balaban has won 5 medals, four of which gold, in the 75 kg category. Among juniors, Maxim Rafikov set six world records in every event. Zaharia Anjulovschi (67.5 kg), Tudor Moraru (82.5 kg) and Eugen Gavriluta (90 kg) won gold in a number of events.
In the veterans’ competition, Alexandru Pasa won gold in the 100 kg class.
The World Powerlifting Championship involved over 500 athletes from 14 countries. The next competition for the national squad is the European Championship that will take place in Ukraine in September.
