The Republic of Moldova will be able to benefit from financial support from Japan through the agency of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM). A meeting held at the Ministry of Environment centered on the opportunity of implementing new projects based on this mechanism that is promoted by Japan under the umbrella of the United Nations Framework Convention in Climate Change, IPN reports.

Moldova and Japan signed the Memorandum of Cooperation for establishing the JCM on September 6, 2022. The Joint Committee of the JCM is now being constituted. A seminar is to be held in November to inform the general public about the JCM projects.

The company “SDG Impact Japan” initiated a feasibility study together with the Moldovan company “Zernoff” for using residues from bioethanol production to generate electrical energy. The feasibility study will be ready by the end of 2023. The JCM project proposal will be submitted to the Ministry of Environment and the Joint Committee for coordinating the JCM projects.

The Ministry of Environment welcomed the initiative and informed that the subsequent actions will be coordinated with all the relevant institutions.

The Joint Crediting Mechanism aims to facilitate the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions through diffusion of leading low-carbon technologies, products, systems, services, and infrastructure, and to this way contribute to achieving the Paris Agreement’s goal to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.

The JCM partnership agreement was signed by 25 countries.
