The Republic of Moldova in the near future will present a strategy for settling the Transnistrian conflict, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Gheorghe Balan said in a news conference entitled “Resolution through Europeanization. Quo Vademus in the process of integrating Transnistria?” on June 6, IPN reports.

According to Gheorghe Balan, there has been no clear-cut strategy that would have been promoted by the authorities. “We are close to finalizing and presenting a clear view of the Moldovan authorities on the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. This will be presented to the public for debates and to the development partners,“ stated the official.

He noted that a reintegration fund should be created. “When we become attractive for the inhabitants of the Transnistrian region, it will be rather hard for the foreign armies and special services there to hamper the reintegration process. The problem resides in the reticence of the administration of the Transnistrian region and in the interest of foreign players,” concluded Gheorghe Balan.

Mihai Godea, adviser to the Premier on security issues, said the strategy for settling the Transnistrian conflict should be followed by a strategy based on small steps and a clear plan of action for the executive.

Director of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul” Igor Munteanu said the authorities should think up a policy that would have depth. “When we speak about the Transnistrian conflict, we speak about a source that generates instability. Political will is required of the governmental authorities and these should finish what they started so that this view is assumed at the upper level,” he stated.

Currently, the Transnistrian conflict is addressed at the 5+2 format talks that include Chisinau, Tiraspol, Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE, with the U.S. and the EU taking part as observers.
