Moldova to have a Central National Office to combat counterfeiting

The Republic of Moldova will set up a National Central Office to combat counterfeiting of currency. The Interior Ministry says the institution will facilitate the exchange of information with other states and coordinate investigations in cases of counterfeiting, IPN reports.

The government has approved the draft law necessary for the country's accession to the International Convention for the Suppression of Counterfeiting Currency, signed in Geneva in 1929.

In order to ensure the implementation of the provisions of the convention, it establishes the creation of a Specialized Contact Point. The Ministry of Internal Affairs assumes the responsibility for the management of this point by setting up a Central National Office within the Specialized Directorate on Counterfeiting of Currency of the National Investigation Inspectorate of the General Inspectorate of Police.

"Accession to the International Convention for the Suppression of Counterfeiting Currency is a step towards rapid and efficient adaptation to European standards, thus ensuring citizens high quality services focused on their needs and safety", a press release said.
