Regional security was deteriorated as a result of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The military actions close to Ukrainian nuclear facilities, such as the Chernobyl and Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plants, generate serious concerns about nuclear and radiological security and endanger life and security on the European continent, Ruslan Bolbocean, secretary of state at the Ministry of Foreign Affair and European Integration, stated in the Tenth Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, IPN reports.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affair and European Integration, in the conference the official underlined the importance of stepping up the international community’s efforts to restore the rules-based international order, of consolidating the international treaties and agreements on non-proliferation, disarmament and arms control and of implementing the commitments undertaken by the parties to the Treaty.

“Our common objective remains clear and unchanged – to promote a firm comment of all the states that are parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to fully meet the obligations set down in Treaty as this will create a favorable environment for reducing risks and promoting international security,” said Ruslan Bolbocean.

He also spoke about the steps taken by the Moldovan authorities to prevent the transfer and transit via the country of nuclear materials, technologies and components that can be used to make weapons of mass destruction.

The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is a landmark international treaty whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament. A total of 191 states have joined the Treaty so far.
