The Moldovan producers can and need to export at least 100,000 tonnes of sugar this year. The forecasts were made by representatives of Südzucker Moldova, which is one of the three largest sugar producers in Moldova, IPN reports.
Südzucker Moldova informed that almost 125,000 tonnes of sugar were produced at its two factories. Such a quantity is more than enough for satisfying demand on the home market, which totals about 80,000 tonnes.
Since the start of this year, the price of sugar has constantly grown in the EU countries, including Romania, which is the most important export market in the EU for the Moldovan sugar producers. Under the Association Agreement with the EU, Moldova in 2015 can export over 37,000 tonnes of sugar without paying customs duties. Last year, the European Commission adopted a decision according to which the preferential quota on the import of sugar into the EU could be raised on condition that Moldova ensures the control of the import and does not allow the sugar imported from other countries to be re-sold in the EU as Moldovan sugar.
So far this year the sugar has been exported actively on the Eastern markets as well. Südzucker Moldova said that in general, the depreciation of the leu favors the augmentation of exports as the sugar to the EU is sold in euros, while on the Eastern markets in US dollars.
In 2014, Südzucker Moldova exported 58,600 tonnes of sugar to the value of 519 million lei, by 37,500 tonnes more than in 2013.
