The Republic of Moldova has benefited enormously from the cooperation with NATO in increasing both military and civilian capabilities for combating hybrid threats and managing crises, Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated in a meeting with NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană at the NATO headquarters in Brussels, IPN reports.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the visit to the headquarters of the North Atlantic Alliance coincides with the marking of 30 years since Moldova joined NATO’s Partnership for Peace program.
During the meeting, the officials discussed such issues as the achievement of the objectives of the Moldova-NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan, strengthening of Moldova’s defense capabilities and cooperation in combating new threats to Moldova’s security.
According to the Ministry, Moldova benefited from the cooperation with NATO in increasing capabilities in the military sector and also in combating hybrid, cyber threats and in crisis management. At the same time, Moldova contributed to strengthening security in Europe by participating in the KFOR peacekeeping operation in Kosovo. This proves that the Republic of Moldova is not only a consumer of security, but also contributes to regional security.
“I reiterated the interest in the expertise and assistance of the organization for modernizing the security and defense sectors of the Republic of Moldova. Despite all the challenges, we will continue our path towards EU membership and strengthening of cooperation with NATO. We also talked about the latest developments regarding regional security and the risks generated by the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine. The Republic of Moldova will continue to support Ukraine in these complicated moments,” said the Moldovan official.
“The NATO Deputy Secretary General reaffirmed the Alliance’s commitment to the partnership with the Republic of Moldova, respecting the sovereignty, territorial integrity and neutrality status of the country. Mircea Geoană reiterated the support for the European integration of the Republic of Moldova.”
