Moldova goes up in ICT Development Index rankings

Moldova has moved up four spots to 61st out of 166 countries included in the annual ICT Development Index (IDI) rankings, recently released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Moldova's standing is now 0.95 point above the world average, the Moldovan ICT Ministry said in a press release.

Moldova is in a group of countries with medium IDI values, which also includes Romania (58th) and Ukraine (73rd). Denmark is leading the rankings, followed by South Korea, Sweden, Iceland, United Kingdom, Norway, the Netherlands and Finland.

ITU's flagship “Measuring the Information Society” report, which accompanies the rankings, shows that Moldova has the highest international Internet bandwidth per Internet user in the region (115 845 bit/s per user).

Introduced in 2009, ITU’s IDI is widely recognized by government, UN agencies and industry as the most accurate and impartial measure of overall national ICT development. It measures ICT access, use and skills, and includes such indicators as mobile cellular subscriptions, households with a computer, Internet users, fixed and mobile broadband Internet subscriptions, and basic literacy rates.
