Moldova confirms it will take part in 2014 Winter Olympics

The National Olympic Committee of Moldova confirmed the participation in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games that will take place in Russia’s Sochi. The Committee’s chairman Nicolae Juravschi signed the confirmation letter officially in a news conference on April 9, IPN reports.

“It will be the sixth participation for our country. This shows that the winter events develop. We must educate our sportspersons, even if we do not have the necessary conditions,” said Nicolae Juravschi. He anticipated that at the Winter Olympics next year Moldova will be represented by five or six athletes.

In the news conference, there were presented the sportspersons who will receive Olympic scholarships Sochi 2014 from the Olympic Solidarity program. These are: Victor Pinzaru (biathlon/skiing), Alexandra Kamenshchik (skiing), and Bogdan Macovei (sledding). They will get by US$1,500 a month. “This money will go to partially cover the costs of the preparations for the 2014 Olympic Games,” said Cristina Vasilianov, secretary of the National Olympic Committee.

The 24th Winter Olympic Games in Sochi will take place between February 7 and 23, 2014.
