The hoisting of the flag in 1990 meant courage and freedom. The flag reminds of those who sacrificed their lives when defending the homeland, Prime Minister Pavel Filip stated in a ceremony held at the Ministry of Defense to celebrate the National Flag Day, IPN reports. “The National Flag Day is a moment when we think about unity. Before the flag, we are all equal. This flag is of the people, of those who sacrificed their lives for the tricolor, in the name of independence,” stated the Premier.
President Igor Dodon, who is in St. Petersburg on a visit, transmitted online a congratulatory message on the occasion of the National Flag Day. He said this is a very important holiday. The state flag symbolizes victory in the war for maintaining the sovereignty and independence of a state. Besides its heraldic content, the flag represents the principles of democracy, equality in rights and freedom of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
The tricolor was designated the national flag on April 27, 1990. The National Flag Day started to be celebrated in 2010.
